Warning This list relates to the term 2022-23 which ended on 31/07/2023

Key Strands readings

These readings particularly relate the three strands of the maths course and you should read those marked as Essential in this section. However, the other sections below give many other texts that are relevant to each strand!

Strand 1: Mathematical proficiency - learning mathematics

Strand 2: Teaching for mathematical proficiency

Strand 3: Subject knowledge for teaching mathematics

Policy guidance

These items provide the policy and curriculum contexts that frame current practice.

Books to help with subject knowledge as a teacher of mathematics

There are many books that are very helpful with subject knowledge for teaching mathematics - these particularly link with Strands 2 and 3. We will refer particularly to the top book here, Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers on the University lead maths course, but other books also help you to explore the subject knowledge you need as a teacher of mathematics.

Children learning mathematics

There are many books that are very helpful for understanding children's learning in mathematics - these particularly link with Strands 1 and 2, but there are clear implications for subject knowledge too. This section will be particularly useful if you research and write about children's learning in mathematics for an assignment. Some books are particularly related to teaching FS and KS1 children.

Useful National Strategy Resources

The National Strategy is pre the current National Curriculum, but some excellent resources were produced. These two resources are particularly useful still!
